Abstract: In an era of rapid digital transformation, the phenomenon of digital disconnection is becoming increasingly prevalent. However, there remains a lack of scholarly attention to digital disconnection among older adults. This study conducted in-depth interviews with 22 older adults who had experienced digital disconnection, employing phenomenographic analysis to examine the data. The findings reveal that technological, informational, social, and individual factors are the primary drivers of autonomous digital disconnection among older adults. Under the direct influence of temporal and physio-psychological perceptions, they adopt three main disconnection strategies: cognitive adaptation, technological restriction, and social interaction optimization. Based on these findings, this study develops a behavioral model of autonomous digital disconnection among older adults, illustrating how different motivations lead to different disconnection strategies. Finally, the research offers both theoretical and practical implications for promoting digital literacy and well-being among older adults.
