Abstract: The availability of simple and user-friendly filters and template-based shooting methods has lowered the barrier to entry, encouraging many older adults to participate in this global cultural phenomenon. This study employs the Q methodology, integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches, to investigate the motivations of older users in recording short videos with filters through exploratory factor analysis. Based on the theory of digital self-extension, the study further examines the social interactions involved. It assesses the relationship between demographic variables, particularly gender differences, and the use of beauty filters. A total of 23 seniors engaged in short video creation with filters were included in the study, revealing five distinct user preference types: attention-seeking, trend-following, image-management, conformity-driven, and fun-seeking. Different motivational factors underlie each type, reflecting diverse preferences in filter usage. These findings provide insights into the psychological world of older adult users and contribute to enhancing their quality of life in the digital realm.
